XMas Handicap 5K Fun Run, 27/12/15
Record Turnout at Stonehaven Xmas Handicap 5K Run
With storms battering Stonehaven and the race organiser unwell, chances of the race going ahead were looking slim at 11pm on Boxing Day. However the 27th dawned bright and sunny, though cold, and the race organiser recovered enough to turn up in body if not mind! As a result of the change in the weather, and a general upturn in popularity of running, an unprecedented 68 runners turned up at the pavilion, more than double the historical average. It’s safe to say our resources weren’t quite geared up for this number and we encountered some problems along the way from which lessons will be learned for next year! We were particularly delighted to welcome 12 runners under 16 years of age, all of whom should be proud of their achievements last Sunday. With the support of a calm team of volunteers we produced a set of race results, refreshments were served and the prizegiving was held back in the warm pavilion. Congratulations to category winners Kat Oatey, Steven Watters, Darcy McNeill, Jo Thom and Michael Barker. Special mention to Emma Swanson whose race number was missed in the finish line melee but we believe produced an amazing race time at the tender age of 10 years old. Stonehaven Running Club thanks all volunteers and race participants and we hope to welcome you back next year when we will be geared up to accommodate the growing numbers!
